アニメから学ぶ英語リーディング:鋼の錬金術師

アニヲタはアニヲタを呼ぶのでしょうか。

一緒に暮らしているオーストラリア人のハウスメイトも、アニメが好きだそうで一番好きなのは「鋼の錬金術師」なんだとか。

オーストラリアやカナダでも鋼の錬金術師を知っている人は多く、アニメ好きの外国人の中では有名なんです。

今回は日本でも海外でも人気のある「鋼の錬金術師」から英語の勉強をしていきましょう。

鋼の錬金術師は英語でなんていうの？

鋼の錬金術師は、Fullmetal Alchemistといいます。

Fullmetalは完全な鋼を意味し、Alchemistは錬金術師を意味しますね。

日本語をそのまま英語にしています。

Brotherhoodはそのままですね。意味は兄弟や仲間という意味です。

ホムンクルスの意味は？

ホムンクルスの名前は「七つの大罪」から由来されています。

七つの大罪は英語でSeven deadly sins/Seven capital sins/Seven cardinal sins と呼ばれています。

Lust ・・・情欲

Gluttony・・・暴食

Envy・・・嫉妬

Greed・・・強欲

Wrath・・・憤激

Sloth・・・怠惰

Pride・・・傲慢

第一章　鋼の錬金術師は2種類ある

One of my all-time favorite animes is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. If you don’t know there are 2 Full Metal Alchemist series there is Full Metal Alchemist from 2003 and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood from 2009, going forward I will abbreviate Full Metal Alchemist to FMA. Growing up I became familiar with the FMA 2003 series, it would air on Friday nights on an anime-focused broadcasting block on the Canadian television station known as YTV.

One of my all-time favorite anime is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

第二章　Brotherhoodはどんな感じ？

When I first watched FMA I was enthralled this series was dark, moody, violent, and had a lot of emotional highs and lows. Unfortunately, when I was a Kid I never watched the finale of the series and never really got closure on what happened in the story until Ne-yan and I watched it together. When I was in high school I saw the DVD box set for FMA Brotherhood and started collecting the following box sets and I would watch it with my younger brother. At first, this new FMA series seemed almost the same as the first one, maybe a lot faster-paced, it wasn’t until after about 13-15 episodes it took its departure from the original TV series and gave me new characters and scenarios to watch.

When I first watched FMA/

僕が鋼の錬金術師を初めて見たとき

I was enthralled this series was dark, moody, violent,

私は虜になった/暗くて、陰気で、激しく

and had a lot of emotional highs and lows.

そしてたくさんの負と正の感情があるシリーズの

Unfortunately, when I was a Kid/

残念ながら、私が子供で

I never watched the finale of the series/

そのシリーズのフィナーレを見ていなかった。

and never really got closure on/

その結末を本当に得ることはありませんでした。

At first, this new FMA series seemed almost the same as the first one,

maybe a lot faster-paced,

多分はるかにペースが速く

it wasn’t until after about 13-15 episodes/

それらは大体13話から15話の後

it took its departure from the original TV series/

もともとのオリジナルなTVシリーズから脱して

and gave me new characters and scenarios to watch.

そして新しいキャラクターとシナリオを提供してくれました。

第三章　好きなポイント

I really love FMA Brotherhood. the story is great and enticing, and the characters are really well written, my top 3 characters are Izumi Curtis, Olivier Armstrong, and Roy Mustang. Naturally, FMA Brotherhood was better because it followed the manga, but FMA 2003 is also a really great show on its own as it tests the limits of its characters, it pushes both Edward and Alphonse past their breaking points, and gives the audience something of a what-if scenario and character study. Again both series are great, I highly recommend reading Full Metal Alchemist or watching Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. 

I really love FMA Brotherhood.

because it followed the manga,

but FMA 2003 is also a really great show on its own

しかし2003年の鋼の錬金術師それ自身も本当に素晴らしいものです。

as it tests the limits of its characters,

キャラクターの限界をテストし

it pushes both Edward and Alphonse past their breaking points,

エドとアルの限界点を超えて押し上げ

and gives the audience something of a what-if scenario and character study.

そして視聴者に起こりうるシナリオやキャラクターの個性の描写などを与える

Again both series are great,

もう一度いいますが、どちらも素晴らしいです。

I highly recommend reading Full Metal Alchemist
